Rabbit Breeding? Help?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Ive got 2 lionhead rabbits (a male and a female, and yes they dont share a cage :P ) and im gonna be breeding them later this month. Just to check that ive researched all i need to know could u guys answer some of these questions?

1. They both have to be 6 months or older?
2. The kits should be due around 30-32 days after mating takes place?
3. The kits should be weaned once their about 7/8 weeks?
4. How old do the kits have to be before I can touch them?
5. Around what age should the kits start eating solid food?
6. What should I do if theres a dead kit in the cage? (Remove it then put it where?)
7. How long should I wait until I can breed my rabbits again after the kits have been weaned? (1 month? 2 months?)

Any other info would be helpful :)

1. They both have to be 6 months or older?correct
2. The kits should be due around 30-32 days after mating takes place? correct

3. The kits should be weaned once their about 7/8 weeks?correct
4. How old do the kits have to be before I can touch them?i handle them at 7 days old some people handle from day 1 but i don’t think the mummy likes it shes very protective about them at that age.
5. Around what age should the kits start eating solid food? mine start at around 3 weeks
6. What should I do if theres a dead kit in the cage? (Remove it then put it where?)wrap it up, bury it or put in th bin.
7. How long should I wait until I can breed my rabbits again after the kits have been weaned? (1 month? 2 months?)i always wait at least 3 months before breeding again.
this web site contains a lot of info
www.mismatch.co.uk/rabbitbreed.htm
provide her with lots of nesting materials and give her double the food.
also take the male out he may attack her babies.
good luck and have fun with the babies.

do lionhead rabbits and holland lops get along with each other?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

i want to know if lionhead rabbits and holland lops get along with each other so i can let them play together and i want to know if they learn fast.
-thanks

Bunnies do not recognize breed. Not to the extent that they won’t get along with eachother because of it. The important thing is to find to rabbits who already seem not to mind each other, then you have to go through a bonding process, which may only take a couple weeks, or could take months.

I had a Netherland Dwarf. I decided to get him a girlfriend (both fixed). So, I took him to the shelter and introduced him to a couple different female rabbits. One bunny (a silver martin) was too scared of him, the staff member who was helping me thought that they wouldn’t be a good match. Then we introduced him to a lovely Hotot mix. They didn’t attack each other right away, which often happens when two rabbits meet for the first time, and Holly didn’t mind to much when Oz mounted her. She tolerated it for a few seconds, and then hopped away.

So, I took Holly home with me. But that’s not where it ends.
They were pleasant to each other for about a week, and then Oz got irritated with something Holly did and they started fighting. For two months, whenever I put them to play together, they’d get along for a little while (5 minutes to half an hour) and then they’d start to fight, and I’d have to separate them.

All of the sudden, after about two months, they stopped fighting, and now they are best friends :)

Go to www.rabbit.org to learn more about the bonding process.

Showing my rabbit in 4-H?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Hello all!

I have a fully pedigreed Chocolate-Tort Netherland Dwarf doe that can’t shown with ARBA(American Rabbit Breeders Association) so I’ve decided to do 4-H showing, but I have some questions.

1~How old do you have to be to show in 4-H?
2~Does the rabbit have to be pedigreed?
3~What breeds are recognized with 4-H?
4~What colors are recognized with 4-H?
5~How much info do you have to know with 4-H (body parts, breed origin, breed use, etc.)
6~How old does the rabbit have to be?
7~Is there a weight limit for the specific rabbit breed (Netherland Dwarf,Lionhead,English Lop,Thrianta, and Holland Lops) in 4-H?

I hope this isn’t to much to ask of everyone here,I’m very new to this :~}!

Thanks a bunch,
Pepsi Cola

I’ve judged many 4-H rabbit shows – the rules vary by county.

Generally, you have to be ages 9-19 to show in 4-H. Most counties do not require that the rabbit be pedigreed. Some counties have utility classes for non-recognized breeds/varieties. I place rabbits with DQ’s lower in 4-H classes (including over/under weight) and explain the DQ’s to the exhibitor. Most 4-H programs follow the ARBA standard, but it depends on county. Most counties have a deadline as to when the rabbit must be in your possession. Except for very young rabbits, there is generally not an age limit.

Most counties allow any rabbit to be used for showmanship. Some counties are very competitive and the exhibitors are very knowledgeable on rabbit conformation, diseases, etc.

I’m going to be working on updating my site and fixing broken links while I’m on holiday. I’ll be getting the 4-H practice questions and showmanship info back up.

You 4-H leader and 4-H book are good sources of information. I also recommend purchasing the ARBA Rabbit Guide book which has extensive information. http://www.arba.net/

ARBA showmanship guidelines http://www.arba.net/PDFs/SHOWMANSHIP.pdf (showmanship varies by county, but many are now using the ARBA guidelines)
