what are some hay brands for rabbits & food?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I am a first time rabbit owner and will be adopting a 9 month old lionhead rabbit and I would like some advice
The shelter i will be getting him from has him currently using timothy hay (all natural) and i found out that I am a bit allergic to it. What are some mild brands that aren’t as potetn(has fresh scent smell just for me since im sensitive to it its a bit strong (almost all green) but still good?
What kind of pellets should I start off with?
(I looked up general bunny info and found alot of expert advice such as lower calcium and higher in fiber due to digestive system etc…) but i also read that there are unique needs to every rabbit and rabbit type.

I also bought natures promise zupreem premium rabbit food made from timothy hay. Does that mean its just rabbit food and use small portions as suggested and still leave the hay as the main part of their diet? or does that mean the food has the same value as hay and don’t need to give him as much. There are so many brands and every opinion is different.
heehee XD he already is littertrained XD

sorry for the triple posting. I tried nutriphase for a hamster (seed mix) i learned unfortunately the hard way. :( I feel stupid and from now on i will never ever use a seed mix or a variety mix as a main part of their diet again *for any animal* so don’t worry i won’t go down that route again XD not just the seeds part but more fat than anything else. D:

just concerned because he is still at shelter and i saw him sneeze a few times i think mainly its the shelters hay it uses it could also be dusty and the different animals its housed with in the same room. (if he doesn’t stop sneezing though a few days after i bring him home-i will definitely bring him to a vet.

Timothy hay is going to be the best for your rabbit. You don’t want to use alfalfa because its sweeter and mainly used to more introduce hay to younger rabbits. I’m not sure the other types of hay but your most likely going to be allergic to all of them. You want to allow your bunny to always have unlimited hay its very good for their digestive system. As far as food goes just because it is made out of timothy hay does not mean you should cut back hay its not the same. That’s just what the base of the food is. I use Oxbow for food it is great! Good luck with your bunny and have fun! They are great pets!
