baby lionhead rabbits?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I want my rabbit to have babies but my mom said that the firs batch of rabbits they die because the mom doesn’t know how to take care of them is this true please reply soon thanks…

Hi…I’ve been raising and showing rabbits for 10 years. That’s not always the case, but it is pretty common for first time mothers to have a little trouble knowing what to do. She could have them outside the nestbox, reject them, etc… But if you keep a close eye on the doe when she is due most things are preventable or if she doesn’t take care of them you can hold the babies up to her to feed once or twice a day depending on how well they eat. And most does are much better mothers the second time around. Hope this helps and please feel free to contact me with any further questions you may have.

Should you feed Rabbits carrots every day?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I have a lop eared lion head female rabbit, the vet told me not to feed her a carrot every day but on many websites it says to give rabbits fresh fruit and veg every day – am a little confused, what shall i do?

We feed our six year old indoor bunn carrots and pellets and parsley and mint every day, and he’s extremely healthy. And hay and water is always available to him of course too :-)

Generally speaking, before six months, bunnies’ main diet should be hay, water, and lucerne pellets. Some say you can begin introducing vegetables at four months, some say not until six months of age. Most importantly, when you begin to introduce vegies, you must do it VERY slowly and gradually – begin with just one slice or one very small piece of your chosen vegie or fruit, and make sure it doesn’t give her diarrhoea over the next 24 hours before giving any more. Please see my website, where I’ve written articles on this, at

Also, NEVER give lettuce and NEVER give cabbage to rabbits – lettuce and cabbage are both very bad for rabbits, can cause diarrhoea and bloat which can kill them -

And please check out my site at

I want my rabbits to breed, help?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I have a long haired cream lop eared rabbit and a tan lion head rabbit. I really want them to have bunnies. Will they look right, and how do you succesfully mate them? She runs away every time he goes up to her hehe !

If she is always running she may not be old enough. Is she at least 6 months old? That is the ideal age to begin motherhood. Also, leaving them in the cage together for a week is ok, as long as there is enough room. But be sure you are putting her in his cage. That is his territory, if he is in her territory she may want to fight or refuse him.

Can I keep two buck lionhead rabbits together from the same litter together?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Me and my friend are keeping two buck lionhead rabbits together from the same litter together, they are about 9 weeks old and have began to have little fights, I am worried we will not be able to keep them together anymore. Is there anything I can do without having to seperate them? Would having them castrated help? I don’t really want to have to do that. (The rabbits are house rabbits)

neutering will help, unaltered males will fight, while not as bad as females, they can seriously injure each other. plus, they spray. please neuter your bunnies.

How do you take care of a Lionhead rabbit?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I just recently (and unexpectedly) got a lionhead rabbit and I need to know how to take care of it. I know you have to comb the mane, but anything else? More specifically:

Can I give it a bath?
Can I trim its nails with a human nail clipper?
What is a healthy diet for it? What does it eat (carrots, cabbage, from the grocery store?)

any other helpful tips and details welcome. thanks!

You can feed them rabbit food! from a pet store! and donot feed them cabbage it will make them sick!!! See if she likes hay and if it makes her sick do not feed her it anymore and if she gets sick give her taost makes their stomach feels better! Yes you can trimnails with a human clipper its not the best but you can.You may bathe her but not a lot best would be once every 3 months. Make sure you take it to a vet to be checked out. Clean her vents (her private parts) with a cotton swab and baby oil once a month and same with clipping nails. You can get all your supplies at a local petsmart or a pet store. And if she gets overheated take a lilwater on your fingers n rub it on the outside of her ears.DO NOT GET ANY WATER INSIDE HER EARS!

what does it mean when your rabbits front paws are in the water dish?

Monday, September 14th, 2009

well my lion head rabbit stuck her front paws in her water dish for awhlie and im worryied something is wrong with her, is this a sigh of heat stroke? or something else???

Unless she does it often or more than twice a week, it sounds like she’s just playing with her water!
Although it’s probably fun for her, this could definitely get her drinking water dirty and, if she drinks it, could make her sick. I’d suggest that you either start getting her use to drinking from a water bottle, or move her water dish into a location where she can’t put her paws into the water.
