A few questions about a baby lion-head rabbit?

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I just got an 11 month old lion-head rabbit two nights ago. I had googled lion heads last night and what I read said to let him out of the cage to hop around and lie on the floor on my belly and he will come over to sniff me and jump on me, and eventually I can sit cross-legged once he gets to know me and he will jump on my lap. However, if I put his cage on the floor and open it, he doesn’t even come over to the door of the cage. I try tapping on it lightly to call him over but he won’t come over. He’s content to sit in his little hiding spot, grooming himself or sleeping. Would it be okay to just put my hand in the cage and pet him while talking to him in a soothing voice and take him out of the cage myself to cuddle with him then put him on the floor? He doesn’t run from me when I put my hand in the cage or struggle to get away when I’m taking him out. And when I held him yesterday he repeatedly marked the fingers on my hand with his cheeks, so could that mean he has bonded with me or will he act differently when he bonds with me? Would he actually run to the front of the cage to see me when he and I have a bond? I’m trying to do everything right with him, which is why I’m asking.

I’ve also read two different things about grooming a lion-head rabbit. Should I be brushing him everyday or once a week?

I also was curious about if I got him neutered. I know that getting a female spayed reduces aggressive behaviors. What behaviors does it reduce in male bunnies aside from trying to mate with females? Is it worth getting the male neutered?

Wow you have certainly done your homework- its great to see.
You shouldn’t have any problems picking up your bunny and stroking him gently. When he becomes a little more comfortable he will enjoy running about your room and jumping on you and binkying, etc.
I dont know about the marking thing, but it sounds like an affectionate behaviour, so he is probably happy when he is rubbing his cheeks against your fingers.
In the future he may run to greet you from his cage- it might take a while to develop this strong a bond, but it will happen eventually- especially if he sees you as a great source of yummy foods and entertainment.
You can groom your rabbit daily or weekly depending on how much hair he is, lionheads arent really fluffy like an angora as far as I know- so he should be fine with a weekly brush, but a quick brush every day wont harm him.
Getting him neutered is a great idea. Males are really annoying when they arent desexed- they hump absolutely everything and get really stressed which can lead to aggressive behaviours. Definately worth having the operation!

lionhead rabbits pros and cons?

Monday, June 15th, 2009

what are the pros and cons of owning these rabbits

Lionheads are lovely rabbits. They're very attractive, small and compact. They generally have nice, level temperaments. They're lively and fun to watch, although they can be a little jumpy. They don't mind a fuss and a cuddle. If you get a Lionhead with a mane it will need to be brushed now and then, and if it has a skirt it is best to clip it so it doesn't get matted. That is really the only con, they're great little rabbits and make brilliant pets.

Lion head rabbit that thinks he's a dog…?

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

I have a lion head rabbit, he's 1 and 1/2 years old and his name is Paddy. He is very lively… VERY lively.
He acts very much like a dog. He jumps up onto the sofas to sit next to you and nudges you, runs in circles around your legs or tugs on your trousers for attention. He likes playing tug-a-war, he likes to play with anything that rolls (has lots of balls), he likes knocking over towers of small cones and plastic cups, he plays with string you dangle in front of him ad he loves running through tubes. If you rub your nails in the carpet he chases them.
He's a spoilt rabbit I know, but he's so active I like him to have things to do when everyones out of the house (because he loves the company of humans… he follows me everywhere and answers to his name)… anyone have any ideas on new toys?

Thanks
Thanks Erin, he does that :) he loves to throw papers around (nuisance really) and he loves playing in boxes. Me and my boyfriend made him a cardboard castle with tunnels and different levels in the summer, he loved it.
He likes to be high up too.
he also drinks my water out of my mug too :)
and doesn't like loud noises… claps, squeaks or barks so squeaky toys are a no go

Your rabbit is not spoiled – he is engaging in his natural behaviours and is probably very happy and healthy because of it! This post has made my day!

Well done for being a great pet owner!

Other toy ideas:

Newspapers, phone books, catalogues etc to shred.
A childrens play box/sand pit filled with bedding to dig in.
Screwed up paper bags etc.
Hanging parrot toys with bells.
Tunnels to run through
Cardboard boxes and tubes of various sizes
Interactive toys – like a small dogs activity ball with some treats in.
Lots of hay to eat.

My Lionhead Rabbit Doesnt Like Water What Can I Substitute It With?

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

My lionhead rabbit Hates Drinking Water He Only Drinks It If Hes Really Thirsty What Can I Do To Substitute It?

-Megg x

I have had a couple of rabbits, but never had a problem with them drinking. Maybe give your rabbit some veggies as a treat that have a high water content such as celery. Start off slow as too much can give them diarrhea. If the problem persists, as far as not drinking, take the rabbit to the vet as something serious could be wrong. Rabbits are delicate animals. My experience was the rabbits went through a lot of water because of the hay and pellets, so your condition is unusual. If you question the health of your rabbit to any extent, make a quick call to a vet to find out if your rabbit needs to be looked at.
